The Bay Area is home to some of the coolest slang, dancing and hip-hop across the nation, and it's about time folks give the California locale its proper due. That's a point P-Lo makes in his new visual for "Put Me on Somethin'," a bouncy collaboration with Bay Area legend E-40 produced by Cal-A.
In the PMAC-directed video, P-Lo heads to the DMV to take a dreaded driving test, only to be met by a strict-looking driving instructor. After driving somewhat wildly, P-Lo is handed a big fat "F" for his test, and has no choice but to wait until the next time he gets to prove himself. That "next time" comes when he drives with his OG, E-40.
"This video is inspired by going to the DMV and being bored completely out of your mind. It represents a lot of double meanings," P-Lo tells XXL of his new visual. "E-40 teaching me the game, but is also my driving instructor. The first driving instructor, he wasn't liking me based on my appearance and energy, not knowing I was well-equipped to drive, but that's a lot of people's first impressions of me—just because you look a certain way, judging a book by a cover."
P-Lo says "Put Me on Somethin'" also serves as a call to give rappers from the Bay Area more attention. After all, they are some of hip-hop's foremost game-givers—and purveyors of awesome music.
"The song itself is a real statement song. When Bay Area gives so much style and culture to the game and people ignore or disregard it," the "Always" rapper says of his hyphy-inspired track with E-40. "We're always putting people onto game. The game needs to give back also. They need me put me on something. I can't keep putting you on, y'all gotta give me something too."
Between the choreographed driving scenes and dancing bits taking place in the new video, P-Lo no doubt looks like he had fun on set, but the best part was getting to chill with a Bay Area legend.
"I got to hang out with E-40, which is always a treat," he says. "We were just talking about different scenarios and how he's stayed in the game for as long as he has. How he didn't let his pride get in the way of his growing and moving forward."
"Put Me on Somethin'" is all set to appear on P-Lo's forthcoming project, More Than Anything, which you can pre-order now here. The "Champion" producer's new effort will only continue what's been a journey toward spreading his influence further than ever.
"My plans for this year is to inspire and touch as many people as I can through my music and show the world what I'm about. I feel like I'm stepping into my own, and I feel like I am what this project represents and what it sounds like, I'm a diverse individual from the Bay Area and i'm going to bring that every time you hear something from me," P-Lo says of his plans for 2017, which includes his More Than Anything tour, beginning on May 31 in New York.
