Peter Berner and how radio has changed over the years

Former host of Triple M's national drive show, Merrick and The Highway Patrol, with Merrick Watts and Jules SchillerRachel Corbett has launched into podcasting.

Rachel's recent podcasting project is You've Gotta Start Somewhere, interviewing well-known media personalities and celebrities to find out exactly what it takes to make it in show business.

In this episode, Rachel chats with comedian, Peter Berner about why he used to deliberately piss off audiences in the early days of his career, the difficulties of being a lazy man in show business and whether his penchant for pessimism has made him a better comedian.

Peter also discusses what he wanted to be when he grew up, why comedy was the only job he was ever committed to and why he was a concern to his mum and dad.

He also explains how radio has changed over the years.

" In the hey days of Sydney radio when I was listening to it and Doug Mulray ruled the airwaves...the model I think was different.

"He provided content that you the listener enjoyed and Denton was the same, he provided content and we would listen to it and then the model changed where it became user driven content - 'where was the best place you've taken a dump? ring us now' - and the jocks would respond, it was a conversation, the model changed.

"They (radio) started to remove the strange hold the personalities had so, Kyle and Hamish and Andy I guess, they're personalities which means you gotta buy them, where I was part of the cage model imminently interchangeable parts."

Next week Rachel catches up with Today Show newsreader, Sylvia Jeffries about crappy gigs she's had to do to get to one of the most coveted jobs in television, the bizarre nature of celebrity and what she wears to bed.
