Lukas Graham at the Roundhouse | Live review
Lukas Graham, known for their catchy funky pop, finished their UK isles tour with a concert at the Roundhouse in Camden, which was possibly also their most energetic yet. The youthful exuberance of the group comes through in every single one of their songs, whether it's funky or melancholic. Recently having been signed by Warner Bros and with successful hits like 7 years and Mama Said, the Danish band has become known by international pop fans through frontman Lukas Forchhammer's unique voice.
Starting with a powerful monologue, Forchhammer exuded energy from the very beginning and infused the room with his natural talent as a performer. The audience was hooked in by his vibrant, strong vocals, even though they may not have known all the lyrics. With his funny little gimmicks, such as drinking his beer during Drunk in the Morning, chit chat and banter about girls and taking pictures of the crowd during the hit song, he kept the young concertgoers engaged. The band's catchy tunes and relatable lyrics echoed in the room and altogether it was simply a night of good old fashion fun.
It was the frontman's voice that carried through the whole concert and impressed at the Roundhouse. Cheering the audience again, he tied the idea of having fun and letting loose into his persona and everything he does. Forchhammer and his longtime friend and bandmate Magnus Larsson had a great stage presence throughout the gig, which spiced up hits such as Strip No More; the energy and youthfulness of the band is comparable to Twenty One Pilots. The fun and games didn't continue throughout the show, however, and at one point the pace was brought down with What Happened to Perfect. It put the focus back on Forchhammer's marvellous, emotion-inducing vocals.
The slower numbers seemed honest and came off as an explosion of raw feeling. After the singing, the stories told about his father were both touching and felt true in a way a lot of other concert speeches don't. Happy Home was especially moving, and the lyrical composition allowed the singer's voice to soar and undeniably touch every single person at the venue. Through his charismatic personality, Lukas Forchhammer's rough and dark stories about friends who have ended up in prison were lit up by a sort of hopeful light and the audience was made to feel at ease. Whatever his Mama Said, she has sure taught him right and made him into a sensible, real artist.
