Lykke, Patti, Iggy, and More: Every Musician in Terrence Malick’s Song to Song

Terrence Malick's new film Song to Song is about two couples (Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender) who "chase success through a rock'n'roll landscape of seduction and betrayal," according to the film's description. It takes place in the Austin music scene and will appropriately premiere at SXSW on Friday, March 10. (It hits theaters in New York and Los Angeles on March 17.) Malick filmed scenes at SXSW in 2012 and Austin City Limits and Fun Fun Fun Fest in 2011 and 2012, capturing actors interacting with bands both on and off stage. For years, the exact details of Song to Song remained shrouded in mystery. Now, the full credits for the film have been revealed, and we know which artists are in it... and who got cut.

Lykke Li plays Ryan Gosling's ex-lover and the two of them perform Bob Marley and the Wailers' "It Hurts to Be Alone" together, in a version produced by Nigel Godrich. The Black Lips play Rooney Mara's band, and, yes, that scene where Val Kilmer chainsaws an amp while Mara plays guitar on stage with them at Fun Fun Fun Fest is in the movie. Dana Falconberry plays Rooney Mara's sister. Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears play a band getting their record produced by Michael Fassbender.

Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Lydon, and Alan Palomo (Neon Indian) all have speaking parts, playing themselves. Diplo, Tegan and Sara, Florence Welch, Big Freedia, and Spank Rock all also make appearances in Song to Song.

An unreleased Patti Smith song called "God Running" appears in Song to Song, and the film also features music by Die Antwoord, Bob Dylan, the Plasmatics, Julianna Barwick, Meredith Monk, Gyptian, Sharon Van Etten, and more.

Arcade Fire, Iron & Wine, and Fleet Foxes are among the artists who were filmed but didn't end up in the movie. They're in good company, though: Christian Bale also shot scenes that didn't make the final cut. (Alas, we won't get to see that long-rumored scene of Christian Bale playing the bongos with Fleet Foxes after all.)
